How Often Should You Really Test Your Pool Water?
By Aquatec Pool Service
Balanced water is the foundation of a healthy pool. When chlorine, pH, and alkalinity stay in range, the water stays clear, the equipment lasts longer, and swimming is comfortable. When they drift, you get algae, scale, corrosion, and irritated eyes and skin — often before the water even looks off.
For most residential pools in the Tampa area, we recommend testing two to three times per week during swim season. Heat, heavy rain, and heavy bather loads all pull chemistry out of balance faster than owners expect, and our summers deliver all three at once.
Start with the two numbers that matter most day to day: free chlorine and pH. Free chlorine should sit between 1 and 3 parts per million, and pH between 7.4 and 7.6. If pH climbs too high, chlorine becomes sluggish and stops sanitizing effectively — which is why a pool can read "enough" chlorine and still turn cloudy.
Check total alkalinity, calcium hardness, and cyanuric acid (stabilizer) about once a week. Alkalinity buffers your pH and keeps it from bouncing around; stabilizer protects chlorine from being burned off by Florida sun. Both move slowly, so a weekly look is plenty.
After a heavy storm or a pool party, test the same day. Rain dilutes stabilizer and drops pH, while a crowd of swimmers introduces a surprising amount of organic load. A quick test and a small adjustment right away beats a green pool three days later.
If juggling all of that sounds like a part-time job, that is exactly what our weekly service is for. We test, balance, and log every visit so you never have to think about it — you just swim.
